Survivor/Loverboy rocked MATO

Sunday, March 9th, 2008 by ssoucy

I’m still trying to recupperate from last nights concert featuring ’70s and ’80s rockers Survivor and Loverboy.
Survivor brought down the house early, starting their performance a little after 7 p.m. Of course they played their mage-hit song “Eye of the Tiger,” written at the request of Sylvester Stallone for the film “Rocky III.”
The Crowd went CRAZY! I think I must have seen about 10 guys shadow boxing during that song. It was a great show though.

When Loverboy took the stage though, you knew you were about to see a performance from seasoned vets of rock. I think Loverboy used to sell out arenas, and the lead singer really brought down the house with his still excellent voice. Though a little older and probably a little wider, they still drove the ladies wild with their leather pants, sequined shirts and chest hair. That’s probably how they came up with their band name! It was like every middle-aged woman there was back in her high school prime swinging, dancing, laughing and shouting lyrics at the aging rockers. It was awesome!

Now to head out and see how the last day of the event will end and which vehicle will take the best of the show.

Vendors Vending and engines rev’n at M.A.T.O

Saturday, March 8th, 2008 by ssoucy

fordanglia2dr.jpgWith vendors selling everything from car needs to incense and ice creams to beers,
it’s a wonder people still remember all of the nice cars that are on display. Jak’d Up Kustoms have a few of their jacked up custom cars out, including a modified VW Super Beetle, that sits so low to the ground, I don’t think even a sheet of paper could fit under it!
The Neely Family of Yuma said they were ready to party tonight at the Survivor and Loverboy concert that will begin around 7 p.m. Sitting under some Canopy Chairs, they looked very relaxed as they ate their ice cream sundaes hurriedly before the sun got to them.
I think most Yumans who came out today or last night, even tomorrow, will appreciate the security throught this event. Patrolmen rode on bikes along the fields, keeping things in line, which is always a good thing.
I estimate at least a few thousand people are here right now, and even in one of the hottest days of the year-thus far- people are still friendly and thoughtful. A little girl dropped her toy she had just got, an inflatable hammer, and didn’t seem to notice. Until a nice man picked it up and handed it to her. Those little things I think is what Yuma such a great community to live in.

And, with the weather cooling a bit as the afternoon progesses closer to the evening, I anticipate those who are leaving the day events will wish they could come again tonight for the show. Blogging near home plate from Desert Sun Stadium,

Music, games and hot-rods…what more could you want?

Saturday, March 8th, 2008 by ssoucy

Right now I sit in the shade, happily listening to Elvis gush how somethings are meant to be. You know ‘ Why do Fools fall in love’? So, needless to say the music is awesome.

I wish I could get a CD of all the great classics that have been playing. I’ve heard ‘House of The Rising Sun’, ‘Louie, Louie’, ‘Help me Rhonda’ and one of the best keyboard solos ever…’Runaway’.

When people sitting under the shade, hiding from the beating sun, heard ‘Wake Up Little Suzy’ they started singing in unison. I mean, like 25 people just singing the words like some sort of giant sing-a-long. It was awesome.

The turn-out is fantastic and I could see how this great annual festival has gone on to see its 16th birthday this year.

The kid rides are great too. From the GIANT inflatable tiger slide, the inflatable jumpers, merry-go-rounds, rock-climbing and the virtual 3D motion rides- all the kids are running through the grass anxious to get to the next ride for 2 or 3 tickets.

I’m off to see some Chevelles, the Ollie, and that huge school-bus, that is if the homemade hot peach cobbler doesn’t call me first!

The sun is bright today at MATO

Saturday, March 8th, 2008 by ssoucy

So I’ve spent the last hour admiring all the cars that came out to show us their luster. One ‘57 Chevy looked like the blackest of black, but as you approached closer it was a forest green. It was so pretty! I can see why people would be proud of the restoration that they’ve done and why they would want to show it off.
The parking was a little bit hectic when I got here, but in this town any event that features vintage cars is sure to be a draw! Rows and rows of vehicles waited to be ushered into the proper parking slot but surprisingly everything went pretty speedy.
So far the only thing that could make this day any nicer would be a few clouds over head, because it sure is a
hot one today.

It’s time I enjoy the food court for awhile, a carne asada burrito looks good, but lets hope it doesn’t do too much damage to my wallet!

Come say “Hi!” at M.A.T.O

Friday, March 7th, 2008 by ssoucy

Hey Yuma,

Just wanted to let you all know that I’ll be hanging around Midnight at The Oasis blogging for yumasun.com

so if you see me around, stop by and tell me what you think of this annual event.

I’ll be there most of Saturday and Sunday and I’m super excited! I love old school cars, especially ‘57 Lincoln Premier’s , ‘70 Chrysler 300 Hurst’s and the favorite 1965 Buick Riviera’s. But who can forget the classic 1965 Ford Mustang? No classic car show would be complete without a few varieties of this beauty!

So stop by and say “Hi”! Tell me what your favorite car is at the nostalgia festival and lets have a great time!
